preachers vs. the IRS

29 09 2008

The Alliance Defense Fund organized a protest this Sunday, in which preachers across the nation stood in their pulpits and told their flocks who to vote for.  Not only is this illegal, it is incredibly insulting (to me anyway).  One of the preachers in this CNN video said, “there’s no way a Christian could vote for Barack Hussein Obama.”  Watch me.

The pastor at City Church had a great message this Sunday about the nation I thought. He didn’t say who to vote for, and I’d get into it, but I’m horrible at explaining.

So what do you like about Obama?

Hey Nate, I didn’t know I showed you my blog!

What I like about Obama: the fundamental shift in attitude he brings. Like JFK, he is a true leader in that he influences people so they *want* to make changes. Also like JFK, the things he’s aiming for are noble causes. He brings nobility back to government. Concrete example: his first bill to become law that puts every federal government dollar on the web so you can see how it gets spent. It seems obvious afterward, but many people fought him over that!

Actually I don’t think you did show it to me. I think I saw it on facebook.

My problem with Obama is the shift he is going for is socialism/marxism. He has no faith or belief in capitalism. Socialized education, socialized medicine, socialized banks, Cap n Trade, etc….. He makes people look to the government to solve their problems, to get into everything. Government is not the solution. I agree he wants people to make changes, but they look to the government for those changes. I just want somebody to make the government go away, get smaller, stop the handouts, stop growing.

There is much more that I can go into, but that is the main part. Unfortunately, McCain doesn’t fit what I what either. Since he sponsored many a bill that goes against smaller government such, not to mention he is for Cap n Trade. I’ll probably vote for Bob Barr the libertarian candidate.

Nate, I can respect that. And I agree government has gotten way too big, especially in the last 8 years on the Republicans’ watch.

Back to the topic of the post, do you think pastors should be able to endorse candidates?

I think they can, but no congregation should listen to it. If a pastor starts going political, thats when I leave. The message the pastor at City Church gave wasn’t about who to vote for. And dang it, I liked, but I can’t put it to words. Yeesh, I’m bad at that. Anyway, here is the gist of what I can remember and after quickly scanning the audio of that sunday. The points he gave anyway:

1 Humble and repent

2 Do not speak evil of dignitaries
3 Live righteous, vote righteousness
4 Pray to the God who appoints men over nations
Daniel chapter 5:21
5 Preach the gospel to the nations
6 Pay taxes, give honor to who honor is due
Mark 12:17

Theres more, but oh well.
